The CMU Promise
Terms and Conditions

NEW STUDENTS

In the 2005 fall semester, the total annual undergraduate tuition rate for new in-state students is fixed at $213 per credit hour. This amount will not change for these students for the following 4 years; i.e., through the end of summer term 2009.

In the 2005 fall semester, the total annual undergraduate tuition rate for new out-of-state students is fixed at  $495 per credit hour. This amount will not change for these students for the following 4 years; i.e., through summer term 2009.

"New students" include persons who have not been registered at CMU for any semester before fall 2005. The term includes new freshmen and new transfer students.

New students who first enroll in the spring semester or summer term of 2006 will pay the same fall 2005 guaranteed tuition rate ($213 for in-state students and $495 for out-of-state students) for the following 4 years from the date of their initial enrollment.

These guaranteed tuition rates are in effect for the four years stated above. One additional year at the same tuition rate is available if needed to complete a bachelor's degree.

If a student ceases attendance and then resumes attendance during that five years, the same tuition rates will apply through the end of the five-year period. If a student ceases attendance and then resumes attendance after the five-year period, the tuition rates for the later enrollment will be the rates in effect at that time for new students.

RETURNING STUDENTS

Students who earned credits at CMU in the spring or summer of 2005 and who returned in the fall of 2005 are called "returning students." Students who earned credits at CMU previous to spring of 2005 and who return in the fall of 2005 also are called "returning students." They are offered guaranteed tuition rates for a prorated period of time.

All returning  students are assigned to a class standing according to the number of credits completed by the end of summer 2005. Each class of students is guaranteed tuition rates for a prorated period of time.
  • Students who have completed up to 25 credits are assigned a class standing of freshmen and are guaranteed four years of tuition at the rates listed below with a one-year extension if necessary to complete a bachelor's degree.
  • Students who have completed 26 to 55 credits are assigned a class standing of sophomores and are guaranteed three years of tuition at the rates listed below.

TERMS APPLYING TO ALL STUDENTS

The guaranteed tuition rates apply whether students attend part time or full time. Students may enroll at these tuition rates for as many credits in a semester as a university academic policy allows.

These guaranteed tuition rates apply only to courses taken on campus. They do not apply to courses taken through ProfEd or other off-campus programs.

Until the fall of 2005, CMU assessed certain mandatory fees: Student Activity, Campus Improvement, Library, Campus Programming, Technology, Enrollment, and Student Publication fees. Starting in the fall 2005 semester, these fees are eliminated.

Students may be assessed certain fees in addition to the guaranteed tuition rate. For example, certain academic programs assess separate surcharges. Some courses assess a special fee for supplies, field trips, etc. Students studying abroad may have to pay a different tuition rate as assessed by the program or university they attend while abroad. They also may incur additional fees for enrollment, insurance, and travel. Students also pay for services and privileges they choose to purchase such as expanded meal plans and campus parking permits.

The guaranteed rates are available for the number of years stated in the charges and may be applied to either undergraduate or graduate credit only while the student is pursuing an undergraduate degree.

STUDENTS ENROLLING IN 2006-07 AND AFTER

The CMU Board of Trustees will establish new tuition rates for each new entering class. The university intends to offer guaranteed tuition rates for each of these new classes, but it reserves the right to change its tuition schedule for any classes/students not covered by the above guarantee.

Students returning to CMU after the expiration of the years of the initial tuition guarantee will pay the new rates in effect at the time of their re-enrollment.

ROOM AND BOARD GUARANTEE

CMU also provides for a guaranteed rate, set at the date of enrollment, for on-campus room and board in residence halls. For details of this guarantee, see www.reslife.cmich.edu.

This guarantee applies only to residence halls and not to university apartments.
