Going to college is exciting.

But paying for it usually isn't. However, there are ways to finance college that will make it a little easier on you and your wallet (or purse). Before starting college, there are steps you can take toward getting here.

It is important to understand all of your options when it comes to paying for college.

Fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). You can get this form from your high school guidance office or online.

Here's what you need when filling out the FAFSA:

  • Gather your - or your parents, if you depend on them to help you financially - tax information. You may use estimated income from year-end check stubs and W-2 forms to complete the FAFSA.
  • Complete and send the FAFSA either on the Web or through your high school counseling office.
  • List CMU's name and Title IV School Code: 002243.
  • For priority consideration, submit your FAFSA online or by U.S. mail no later than February 15.

Apply for Scholarships. There are hundreds of scholarships available. The earlier you apply, the better.

Enroll in CMU's interest-free payment plan. The CMU Payment Plan lets you break up semester costs into five payments.

Look for a job on CMU's campus. There are hundreds of positions available on campus, from Web site development to helping out as a library assistant. If you get a Work Study opportunity on your merit award letter (which comes after you fill out the FAFSA), you will have high priority on landing a CMU campus job.
