The General Education Competencies represent important skills that students expand during their studies at Central Michigan University. CMU graduates are expected to demonstrate adeptness in the areas of Written English, Oral English, and Mathematics. The requirements under each competency were specifically developed to aid students in mastering the skills necessary to function as constructive and productive citizens.

General Education Competency Requirement
Written English

In general, students complete freshman composition, intermediate composition, and courses within the University Program that contain significant and meaningful writing. The goal is to enhance the student's ability to write clearly and effectively.

Oral English

In general, students complete a course in debate, speech, or oral communication. The goal is to enhance the student's ability to interpret, compose, and present information to a specific audience.

Mathematics

In general, students complete a course in mathematics or statistics. The goal is to enhance the student's ability to understand and solve mathematical problems.
